The renewal periods are listed with the loan periods.

Placing Books on Hold

If a desired book from one of the EU library collections is currently checked out, EU/AGTS students may request that the book be placed on hold. Once a hold has been placed on an item, it will remain in effect for 45 days.  (However, patrons may request that the hold be set to remain in effect for a longer or shorter time period.) If the book is returned during this period, the Library staff will reserve the item at the Circulation Desk and notify the patron that it is available. After notification, the patron will have 48 hours to retrieve the book from the Circulation Desk. If the book is not picked up within the 48-hour time frame, it will be re-shelved into the collection.

In the case of Distance/Doctoral students, the library staff will notify the student when the book becomes available and mail the book to the mailing address listed on the student’s library account.

Anyone who is not currently affiliated with EU (students, faculty, staff, etc.) or a MOBIUS library will not be able to place requests for checked-out EU/AGTS books.  Holds cannot be applied to course reserve items.

Recalls of Books

Any book that has been checked out may be recalled after two weeks of the initial loan period has passed (or 2 days in the case of one week loan periods) if requested by an EU/AGTS student or faculty member. In addition, books can be recalled from any library patron at any point in their loan period if an EU/AGTS professor has requested that they be placed on Course Reserve. Patrons must return recalled books to the library within 48 hours of notification (in the case of distance students, the item should be sent back in the mail within 48 hours) or the book will be considered overdue and the patron will be subject to the EU fine policies.

Reserve Materials

The policies governing the purpose and use of Course Reserve materials are as follows:

  • Faculty members may request that books in high demand for their classes carry a limited loan period--2 hours, 1 day or 3 days. These items will be kept at the Circulation Desk for the duration of the course. Students wishing to view any of these materials must request the specific item(s) from circulation staff.
  • Reserve materials are to be used primarily by those who are currently taking the course for which the book has been reserved. Only students who are taking the course and the professor teaching the course will be allowed to remove 1 or 3 day reserve materials from the library. Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by a library administrator.
  • Two-hour reserve materials are to be used in the library.
  • Only one reserve item may be borrowed at a time.
  • All reserve material may be renewed once for the same period of time as the original limited loan. However, the material may not be renewed if another student from the class has requested it.
  • All reserve books are subject to immediate recall upon notification if the situation warrants it.

Returning Materials

  • Return materials to one of the following locations: a return slot at the circulation desk of the EU library ; the book return located just outside the Burnett library facility ; the book return located at the west entrance of the Kendrick library facility.  Distance students will be responsible for mailing borrowed books back to the EU library.
  • If materials are overdue, present them directly to a library staff member and, if possible, pay the fine.  Distance students should be pro-active in contacting library staff ahead of time if they are returning an overdue book.
  • It is recommended that you do not give materials to anyone else to return for you, because you are ultimately responsible for fines and damages.

Fines

Overdue EU/AGTS Materials - Students

For overdue circulating materials, fines will be levied beginning with the first business day following the due date of the materials. Fines are not charged for days when the library is closed.

If any EU/AGTS student is seriously delinquent (see Lost Items for further explanation) or has fines equaling $50 or more at the EU libraries or any other consortium library, they will have their library account blocked in the circulation system. Once a library account is blocked, the account holder cannot check out any books from the EU libraries until the matter is resolved. (Distance/Doctoral students have an extended built in “Grace Period” that allows time for books to be returned through the mail.  If the book is received by AGTS within this period, the accumulated fines are automatically forgiven and not charged to the student’s account.)

Fines and other outstanding charges not paid after 28 days by a Resident, Distance, or Doctoral student will be transferred to the student's account.

Overdue notices, emails, or voice mail messages may be sent as a courtesy to students.  However, it is the responsibility of the student to return library materials on time and pay the overdue fines whether or not they have received a notice.

Fine Schedule

Regular circulating materials, including DVDs and video/audiocassettes

 $.25 per day

Two-hour reserve materials and CD-ROM materials

Overdue EU/AGTS Materials - Staff

EU/AGTS staff members are NOT subject to daily fines for overdue items.  However, they are subject to the library’s lost book policies and are responsible for the replacement costs of any items that they may lose or that may be declared lost if overdue for more than 28 days.

Overdue MOBIUS Books

For information concerning the fees charged to EU/AGTS students, faculty, and staff for overdue books checked out from MOBIUS libraries, please refer to the Lost Items section.

Lost Items

EU/AGTS Items

Library patrons should report lost items immediately. For students, fines will not be charged beyond the date when the item was reported lost. Regular circulating books, DVDs, and video/audio cassettes not returned will be declared lost 28 days after the due date. One-day and three-day reserve materials will be declared lost 14 days after the due date.

When an item checked out to an EU/AGTS student has been declared lost, a notice will be sent to the student and, unless the item is returned, the corresponding charges of the value of the item*, the fines that have accrued, a $10 processing fee, and a $5 transfer fee will be charged to the student's account (the $5 transfer fee may be waived if the student pays the bill directly to the library staff). For staff, only the value of the item will be charged. In addition, the individual’s library account will be blocked until the matter is resolved.

*Notes on replacement costs:

  • Notices sent by the library’s circulation system will include a default item price of $50 for each billed book.  The total price indicated in these notices should not be interpreted as a final invoice since library staff will adjust each billed list item based on the actual list price of the book.
  • The cost of out-of-print books will be the current market value of the book or a similar book as determined by consulting information from book vendors.
  • The replacement cost of a lost DVD will be based on the actual replacement cost of the new DVD.
  • As a general principle, replacement charges will not be charged to a student account until either the student has requested it or at least two weeks have passed since the original billing statement was sent to the patron.

MOBIUS Books

The policies established by the SWAN Cluster and the MOBIUS Consortium in regards to lost books are as follows:

  1. A book will be declared lost and a bill will be produced when the book is 28 days overdue.
  2. The EU library will block patrons who have been billed until either the bill is paid or the item(s) returned.
  3. There is no upward limit for the dollar amount a lending library can charge for material that is lost or damaged.  The replacement costs charged to the borrowing library could include a $25.00 replacement fee in addition to the actual cost of replacing the material, as assessed by the owning library (the owning library may waive the $25.00 replacement fee at their discretion).
  4. Although the EU library has the option to attempt negotiation with the lending library for a lower replacement or lost book fee, it is ultimately up to the discretion of the lending library whether they want to negotiate.
